March 2021 Meeting

Our 2021 season started in March with a zoom meeting.

Garden photographer Adrian James shared his beautiful photos and stories of 3 very different gardens. Marwood Hill, a valley garden in Devon’s rolling hills with 3 lakes, National Collection of Astilbes, bog planting tree filled views and woodland trails. A garden of wild areas, colourful planting and strategically placed sculptures.

Grade II listed Mapperton Gardens in Dorset with earth banks dating from the 1600’s and neo classical style orangery built in late 1960; its fountain court garden in the Italianate style of Harold Peto, tightly clipped yew shapes and perfectly aligned focal points.

Finally, Yeo Valley Organic Garden in the Mendip hills. A garden of colourful rooms, perennial packed gravel area, gorgeous wildflower meadow, modern grass borders, blossom avenue and stylish ‘vegie plot’. A glowing stand of silver birch, interesting sculptures and ornamental ironwork amongst great planting.

Whilst we were on ‘mute’ for the talk I hope Adrian could imagine our enjoyment and knows that we were chuckling as he showed us the paintings on the inside of the gents and ladies loos at Yeo Valley!
